Something About Mathematics

As I’m studying mathematics, I guess I should finally tell you something about mathematics.

The truth is that you probably don’t know mathematics. Math is not what you learned at school. Math is not calculating or applying formulas to get results you don’t even understand. Even studying mathematics involves some things which I wouldn’t label as real math.

The Basis of Successful Self Development

Most people rush into self development without thinking and then they wonder why they end up worse off. They followed every piece of advice they could get. But still they completely failed. How can that be?

Is it because people are different? Does self development only work for a special kind of people? I don’t think so. But there’s one essential part that is rarely mentioned:

Successful self development needs a solid basis. It has to come from within.

Sadly, a lot of people seem to ignore that fact completely. They try to rush into self development, using any promising sounding scheme that they found anywhere on the internet. But do they ever ask themselves whether they are ready to use the scheme? Probably not. Unfortunately, even the most sophisticated scheme only works if you comply with its requirements.

Site Update: Resources

I just added another page to this blog. You can find it under “Resources” in the main navigation bar.

It contains a list of recommended books, so you might want to check it out if you’re seeking for some additional information about psychology and self development related topics.

The resources page will be regularly updated. (Depending on how many books I manage to read in my spare time.) ;-)

The Phonetic Alphabet

Basically, the phonetic alphabet associates every one-digit number with a consonant phonetic sound. This sounds more complicated than it actually is, so don’t be afraid of reading the rest of this article.

Range of Use

The phonetic alphabet I am talking about is used as a memory aid. Numbers are very hard to remember, so transposing them in words makes it a lot easier to remember them.

It may take a little time to get used to it but you will bypass a lot of frustration once you got comfortable using it.

The Basics of Memory Improvement

Everybody wants to remember something from time to time. However, most people don’t know how to do that efficiently, so they try to learn facts by mere repetition.

This method is very unlikely to bring about any amazing results. So let’s take another approach to memorization.

First, let’s see which things are easy to remember and which are not.

Things We Remember and Things We Forget About

Basically, we remember things that concern ourselves. If we got strong emotions during a situation, we’ll remember it afterwards. If we don’t feel anything about a certain fact, we’ll probably forget that fact.

Things that concern us only indirectly, like the exact numbers of a telephone number, are very hard to remember if you use the wrong technique. The problem is that we often want to remember such things. We don’t want to forget the birthdays of our friends for example.

Review of November 2009

I decided to post a short review with each passing month.

So this is what happened in november:

  • I needed some time to get used to university again, so my overall productivity concerning this site has decreased a little bit.
  • I did a total of 9 posts. 6 articles.
  • I removed all ads from MuscularBrain.com.
  • I signed up for twitter some days ago. Next month’s review will tell you about the results.
  • I changed the design of MuscularBrain.com a little bit. I’m not completely satisfied with it yet, so I’ll continue working on it.
  • I launched another blog, which is about internet and programming related topics: Criticizer.net

Basically, that’s it. Let’s see what december will bring about. ;-)
