Walk Your Way to More Self-Confidence

You can become more self-confident by adjusting your body language. That’s a fact.

Your feelings influence your body language and your body language influences your feelings. It works both ways. It’s just that most people are not aware of the second way, of the way I’ll discuss here. What a pity! They’re missing a valuable opportunity to have a conscious effect on their subconsciousness!

Today I experienced this direct relationship when I was playing around with my own body language while walking to the train station. I decided to increase the range of my arms’ swing. Just a little. Maybe 1-2 inches into either direction.

Strangely enough, it did have a noticeable effect on my feelings: I did feel like I got more energy. Like I was more outgoing, more self-confident.

It was like you do something and then ‘click’. Immediately. Cause and effect. The relation seemed to be so obvious at that time.

And I bet you can experience the same thing by yourself. You should definitely try it out. Just change your walking style, it’s no major thing. And you got nothing to lose and hell of a lot to win. Remember the “language” in the term “body language”, other people will also perceive you as more self-confident if you manage to adjust your walking in the right way.

So if you want to do it, here are the main points of a self-confident body language while walking:

  • Keep your head up.
  • Straighten your back.
  • Pull your shoulders back.
  • Put your chest out.
  • Swing arms a little more than usual.

Still you should be relaxed to some extent. It requires some time for you to become relaxed as it will feel unnatural at first. That’s alright.

Especially keeping the spine straight can feel like you could do it for one minute and then your back would collapse. One small tip to make this progress easier (and faster): Imagine there was a cord at the top of your head which was pulling direction sky.

There’s one little warning though: I’m not sure whether the method described in this article works if you feel really crappy. I’d rather say it doesn’t because you can’t really fake body language but you could also figure that out for yourself.
